Legend of Platamon fortress
On April 13th in 1204, during the IV-th Crusade the knights stormed and plundered Constantinople. As a result, Western Europe, mainly France directed by financiers of Venice, actually seized the Byzantine empire. All territory of present Greece had got under the power of newcomers, who called their new state the Latin Empire.
Having seized Constantinople on the north, the Crusaders moved towards the south to subdue the rest part of the country and establish their customs. Their way run the ancient road – modern freeway Thessaloniki-Athens. Once, in 4th century B.C., Macedonian tsar Philipp II with his son Alexander set their troops this road to conquer intractable Greek poleis and unite them by creating an invincible commonwealth. 1500 years later the history recurred.
The fortress Platamon had declined. The knights, having estimated its strategic value, started fortification works immediately. The best Venetian masters in Europe built up mighty citadel, which also can be seen nowadays. Fortunately, knightly stronghold could be destroyed neither by centuries nor by invasions. Currently Platamonas keeps under control one of the most magnetic territory of Greece.
The armed forces of Crusaders moved to the south. Afterwards the knights kept on waging war in Palestine. That war had been conducting for a long time. During siege the wounded soldiers were left under supervision of the Byzantine doctors in Platamonas. The unusual phenomena began to occur in Platamonas. Wounded started recovering quickly, much quicker, than it happened earlier. Whether ability of the advanced Greek doctors, whether curative sources, whether various dishes, whether local favorable climate promoted fast-moving general health improvement of soldiers. The message about magic properties of these places was quickly spread among all European knights. Since then the knights who had got wounds in Palestine, went Greece for improvement. The most notable crusaders, winners of battles, were awarded with plot of arable land, and the European nobility, having bought up the best plots and having constructed wonderful villas, visited Platamonas fashionable resort.
